3 Ways to Grow Your Business in a Slow Economy

It can be difficult enough to grow, expand and maintain a healthy business in a strong economy. When the market turns sour, it can spell disaster for the small business owner conscious of cost. Here are three simple steps you can take to keep your business expanding, even when the going (or growing, in this case) gets tough.

Reward Customer Loyalty
When looking to branch out, focus on your existing customers-they already know and trust you. The truth is that it's easier and far cheaper to increase business from existing clientele than to rope in new prospects. Offer your loyal customers new or additional products and services relating to an existing offer-then reward that same trust and loyalty by offering these services at a reduced rate. Also, consider offering discounts on existing services for the referral of new business prospects, in lieu of additional incentives.

Get More Bang from (Marketing) Buck
If you're aiming to keep your sales soaring without significantly increasing your advertising expense, buckle down when it comes to negotiating without advertisers. Remember that economic downturns affect advertisers substantially too. Use this downswing to your advantage and agree on a fair, yet discounted price. If the price is set in stone, you might request a larger ad for the same money.

Good Publicity on the Cheap
Strike out and launch your own PR agency in the interest of your existing business. Combine the loyalty of your customers with a little marketing savvy-ness and put together an e-newsletter. Offer tips, inside industry information and additional tools to your loyal customer base. Give your readers the opportunity to forward your literary calling card to friends. It only takes a handful of email addresses and a creative copy writer, which your business already might have. Don't think it will work? You're reading one. Point taken?

The Power of the Tongue ( Facts about Words )

Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue, keepeth his soul from troubles. (Proverbs 21:23)

  1. Any man who controls his mouth is literally protecting his own life.
    "He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life". (Proverbs 13:3)

  2. Right words breathe life into everything. "A wholesome tongue is a tree of life". (Proverbs 15:4)

  3. Your personal happiness is influenced by the words that come out of your own mouth. "A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good it is!" (Proverbs 15:23)

  4. The wise are cautious with their words.  "He that hath knowledge spareth his words." (Proverbs 17: 27)

  5. People fail because of the words they speak. "A fools mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul." (Proverbs 18:7)

  6. Words determine which dreams live or die. "Death and life are in the power of the tongue and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof." (Proverbs 18:21)

  7. The timing of your words often decides your success or failure in a situation. "A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in til afterwards."  (Proverbs 29:11)

  8. The wise avoid the presence of those that consistently speak wrong words.  "Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge."  (Proverbs 14:7)

  9. The quality of your words reveals the quality of your heart.  "An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is burning fire."  (Proverbs 16:27)

  10. Words influence and affect the accumulation of your wealth.  "A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.  (Proverbs 18:20)

Juliet's Wisdom: Learn to Succeed...

One of the greatest benefits of your Network Marketing business is the support that is available to you from your upline leaders. In the traditional business world you have to outperform, outlast and outdo others in the company in order to "climb the ladder of success." It's highly unlikely that your colleagues will help you to be more successful than they are!

But in Network Marketing, the only way anyone can succeed is by teaching, supporting, and helping others to succeed. Your upline leaders all want you to be more successful than they are.

Likewise, one of your keys to success in your NM business lies in stepping up to leadership, and this starts as soon as you have sponsored your first RTA. As an effective leader, your job is to support, teach, and train others to become leaders and achieve high levels of success for themselves. On the other hand, 'support' does not mean 'carry.'

The #1 benefit of network marketing is the potential to develop long-term residual income - to become incidental or unimportant to the creation of your income. But in order to achieve that goal of "walkaway income," you have to help other people become independent.

Remember Your Job is to:

1. FIND MOTIVATED PEOPLE… not TO MOTIVATE PEOPLE.

2. FIND a handful of people who see what you see, and will "pick up the ball, and run with it!"

3. TEACH motivated people the proven steps to building a successful business.

4. TRAIN AND SUPPORT people who will take action on their own, not to "pump up" and carry people who won't.

5. DEVELOP "Independent" RTA's, not "Dependent" RTA's.


Teaching, sharing ideas and resources, helping and supporting Representatives in your organization is essential to your success. But "supporting" is not "carrying." Don't cripple your RTA's in your effort to support them. Be sure you are teaching them how to develop and maintain their own successful businesses and become leaders on their own.

How to Make A Comeback

Step 1: Don't live in denial In January 1996, I was coming off my best year in cycling. Suddenly, at age 25, I learned I had advanced testicular cancer. I was given a 50-50 chance of survival and virtually no chance of ever cycling, racing, or competing again. I found the best doctors I could and dealt with it head-on.
Apply it: Confront the reality of your situation. Pretending a problem doesn't exist means you'll never conquer it.

Step 2: Come back from your low point. After cancer surgery, I was at the lowest point of my life, physically and emotionally. But to me, it was all upside from there. That's where the comeback began. When you're at that low point, stop and cherish it because it feels so good to come back.
Apply it: Character is built by picking yourself up after a setback. Don't limit yourself by focusing on prior obstacles. Turn your struggles into fuel for your successes.

Step 3: Surround yourself with a good team. I believed that when I announced my comeback, I would be in demand, but the top offers never came. I joined the American cycling team-- we had to revitalize our focus, formulate a strategy, and train hard to win.
Apply it: The right people make all the difference. Seek the guidance and support to turn your situation around. Don't be afraid to reach out.

Step 4: Face new challenges. After riding for 20 years, I'm heading out into the world to find new horizons. I'm facing new challenges that make seven Tour wins look small: being the best father and advocate I can be. I love a good fight. Let's face our challenges together. I'll ride right alongside you. We all have good fights we need to fight.
Apply it: Comebacks evolve and take time and work. New challenges always arise. Don't back down from the fight to improve your life. Only after we overcome life's strains and difficulties do we truly appreciate the unprecedented highs.

Richard Branson's Three Keys to Entrepreneurial Success

  1. Provide Untapped Value to the Customer: "The most critical thing with any new venture is we must deliver a tremendous value to the consumer so that it enhances all the ventures we've done before it," says Branson. Today, the Virgin brand encompasses everything from soft drinks to airlines. Branson's approach has been to provide something unique in each venture; something the competition lacks. Find the value, find the customers.

  2. Exploit a Passion: "I start businesses when I have a passion for something. That's also why I went into the airline business, even though everybody I talked to told me that there was no money to be made there. I felt that I could make a difference. That's the best reason to go into business because you feel strongly that you can change things," says Branson. It's the entrepreneurial passion and attitude that makes the difference in achieving lasting success.

  3. Trust Your Instincts: "A business has to be involving, it has to be fun, and it has to exercise your creative instincts." Case in point, the "rebel-billionaire" relied on gut instincts to take advantage of opportunities when they presented themselves. Branson wasn't born wealthy, and began his empire by selling yet-to-be touched (i.e. "Virgin") records out of the trunk of his car when it was unheard of to do so. Slowly but surely, he built the expanded his business until it became the multi-billion dollar empire we know today. Mix a great idea with passion.

If they intellectually rich (lots of college degrees and awards) but physically and/or  spiritually poor, ditto.

Everything that is in balance is the only way that true wealth can ever exist.Wealth is not what we have, but what continues on after we no longer exist in this world for those we care about.

  1. Write down all that you are grateful for in your life right now-read it every day.
  2. Make a decision that you will be wealthy. Affirm that decision every day by taking action in that direction.

  4. Read and listen to material (like SUCCESS magazine!) that will support your new outlook and attitude about what's possible.
  5. Teach others the attitudes of wealth. Once you teach it, you will learn it.

1. Start Dreaming and get going.
Create a snapshot of your ideal life with a bulleted list. A life plan will give you a clear direction and help you develop a strategy for getting there.

2. What are you good at?
List your skills and abilities you can build upon to attain your ideal life and then prioritize the development of those skills.

3. Keep your why in front of your eye.
Revisit your life plan frequently and keep it in plain view. Your life plan will remind you of what you want, what's important and what to do next.
